A data collection terminal (DCT) is a compact, handheld device that fits in your hand and includes a barcode reader, keyboard, or touchscreen display.
The terminal operates with a built-in battery and has a sufficiently powerful processor (that’s why they are sometimes called mobile computers).
The principle of operation of the DCT
This device helps to update the database on the PC. It reads the barcodes of each unit and transfers them to the internal memory. This is a mini computer with a scanner, keyboard, and display.
For example, if you receive a large batch of goods, you use a data collection terminal to enter information about the new product into the database, read its barcode, and indicate its quantity. You then transfer this information to your database by connecting the DCT to a computer.
Where are DCT used
Typically, the terminals are used for warehouse operations: receiving goods, spending, inventory. The device can also replace a barcode scanner for field sales or field customer service.
Operating systems and interaction between the terminal and the host system:
Most manufacturers use the Windows Mobile operating system on their terminals, and DOS terminals are also used.
The data collection terminals can accumulate information and transfer it to the database when connected to a PC thanks to the built-in memory and barcode scanner. Storage terminals are an alternative to wired scanners. In a large room, when an employee needs to move from place to place to scan different products, a terminal will be much more convenient than a scanner.
Another option for the data collection terminal is the immediate transfer of information to the database when scanning a barcode via a radio channel or Wi-Fi. In this case, the terminal is part of the network. The system responds to the signal coming from the terminal in the form of information, displaying it on the device’s display.
How to choose a data collection terminal
To make the right decision when choosing a data collection terminal, you need to consider several factors.
If the data collection terminal will be used in a distribution center, you will most likely need a long reading range – up to 2-5 meters. If the barcode is applied to laminated polyethylene or glass, it can make the reading process more difficult.
Thus, the data collection terminal is an intelligent device that allows you to automate all typical warehouse processes, and manage prices at points of sale, and production processes.
The main advantages of working with DCTs:
Simplifies warehouse management, accounting, and order picking speed.
Speeds up product recalculation. Reduces the time spent searching for and identifying products. Reduces the time it takes to take an inventory.
It eliminates the possibility of error (human factor), ensures goods accounting, and detects re-sorting.
DCTs also have different types of scanning beams:
Recognizes code over long distances, reads stereo numbers and stripes.
High performance, but cannot read worn barcodes.
It can scan even worn-out barcodes with a range of only 20 cm.
